The Top of the Pay Range
A few roles are sitting well above everything else this month:
The COBOL role is the one that makes people do a double-take. Decades-old mainframe code still runs banks and governments, and there aren’t many people left who understand it — so AI labs are paying $250/hr to learn from the ones who do. If you have a rare, “nobody does this anymore” skill, this is your reminder that it might be worth a lot.
Finance & Accounting: The Standout Vertical
Finance is arguably the strongest category this month, both in volume and rates.
If you came up through banking, PE, or public accounting, the rates here now rival what many medical specialists earn. AfterQuery in particular has brought a deep bench of accounting sub-specialties (audit, forensic, financial reporting, ASC 606) onto the board.
Legal: Still a $200/hr Vertical
There’s also a fresh batch of M&A and corporate/securities attorney roles on micro1 at $80-100/hr, plus a General Counsel opening. If you’re bar-admitted with real transactional experience, there’s plenty to pick from.
Medical & Healthcare
Healthcare still commands consistently high rates, and the mix has broadened into revenue-cycle and mental health roles.
No patient care, no on-call. You’re evaluating and improving AI systems with your clinical knowledge — and the revenue-cycle roles show AI labs increasingly want the operational side of healthcare, not just diagnosis.
Software Engineering
Engineering remains one of the largest categories, spread across all five platforms.

The paid open-source contributor role is still one of the best-value gigs on the board — real money to write and review high-quality open code.
Voice, Audio & Music
The audio category has grown well beyond voice acting into a full music-and-speech data operation.
There’s also a large set of “Music Audio Expert” roles on Mercor — one per language, covering everything from English and Japanese to Tamil, Punjabi, and Telugu, generally in the $13-46/hr range depending on language and market. If you have a musical ear and speak a specific language natively, there’s likely a slot with your name on it.
Language Experts: The High-Volume Category
Between micro1 and Invisible, language work is now one of the biggest slices of the board — and it’s where the long tail of world languages shows up.
- micro1 Language Experts — roughly $40-95/hr, covering languages from Mandarin and Swedish to Sanskrit, Tibetan, Tamang, and Hmong
- Invisible AI Language Trainers / Alignment Partners — $6-65/hr, spanning Belarusian, Amharic, Icelandic, Kazakh, Catalan, and dozens more
Two things to note: micro1’s rates run noticeably higher for the same kind of language work, and Invisible’s roles have the widest range on the board — the low end is genuinely entry-level. If your native language is rare, the micro1 listings are worth checking first.
Science & Research: PhDs Wanted
AfterQuery has brought a whole shelf of frontier “ML Expert” roles — proteomics, bioinformatics, computational materials science, world models, chip design — mostly at $150-200/hr. If you’re a domain scientist who can also reason about ML, these pay accordingly. Notably, there are entry points for undergrads and grad students here too, not just tenured PhDs.
Writing, Design & Creative
Design rates have climbed — senior product/UX designers are now in the $150-200/hr tier, on par with a lot of engineering work.

- AfterQuery — heavy on frontier “ML Expert” research roles and deep accounting sub-specialties. Lots of $150-200/hr.
- micro1 — the biggest source of language-expert, voice, and game-dev roles, and its language rates tend to beat the rest.
- Turing — engineering and AI-training roles; pay is often listed as “varies/TBD” and set per project.
- Invisible — high-volume language alignment work across a huge range of world languages; the widest pay range, entry-level friendly at the low end.
How to Apply
The same fundamentals keep working:
- Match your real experience to the role. They verify credentials. Don’t apply for MD or bar-admitted roles without the qualifications.
- Finish the whole application. The AI interview is part of it — most people who start don’t finish, and finishing alone puts you ahead of the pack.
- Be specific. “Eight years in M&A at a bulge-bracket bank” beats “experienced in finance.”
- Set up payment properly (Stripe Connect for most platforms) so you’re not chasing your first payout.
- Be patient with matching. Getting accepted isn’t the same as immediate work — projects arrive in waves.
